Recruiters, Agency and Corporate
It’s good to know who it is who is reaching out to you.
Do you know the difference between an agency recruiter and a corporate recruiter? There are many different types of recruiters, and it will help your job search if you know the difference.
An agency recruiter acts as a third party. They work with companies, and the companies are their customers. They don’t necessarily have the direct contact with the hiring manager. They are provided an open job requirement and the agency recruiters have a team who will start cold calling to fill the position. If you hear a statement like “I have a great opportunity for you” but then very little further information is provided, you are more than likely dealing with an agency recruiter.
An in-house or corporate recruiter is someone who is an employee of the company. They work only for their employer.
You want to make sure that any recruiter you work with is knowledgeable. Be mindful that a recruiter will not know the technologies as well as you do if it’s for a technical position. They will know what qualifications are needed for the company and the position, but won’t necessarily have in-depth knowledge.
Something to be cautious about is if a recruiter immediately asks for a referral. This may in fact be an agency recruiter who is seeking leads for new business. This might eventually come up in the process, but if this happens first thing in an email or the conversation, this is a big red flag.
On the flip side, if this is an agency recruiter who has been working in the field for a long time and represents several of the companies that you are interested in working with, take the call.
Most importantly you want to work with someone who you trust and develop a rapport with. Recruiters can be a tremendous advocate and resource for you through the job search process.
